چکیده

If u(t; x) is a solution of a one{dimensional, parabolic, second{order, linear partial di erential equation (PDE), then it is known that, under suitable conditions, the number of zero{crossings of the function u(t; ) decreases (that is, does not increase) as time t increases. Such theorems have applications to the study of blow{up of solutions of semilinear PDE, time dependent Sturm Liouville theory, curve shrinking problems and control theory. We generalise the PDE results by showing that the transition operator of a (possibly time{inhomogenous) one{dimensional di usion reduces the number of zero{crossings of a function or even, suitably interpreted, a signed measure. Our proof is completely probabilistic and depends in a transparent manner on little more than the sample{path continuity of di usion processes.

Orientation Diiusions

100 Orientation di usions P. Perona Abstract|Di usions are useful for image processing and computer vision because they provide a convenient way of smoothing noisy data, of analyzing images at multiple scales, and of enhancing discontinuities. A number of di usions of image brightness have been de ned and studied so far; they may be applied to scalar and vector-valued quantities that are natura...

Transition Operators of Diffusions Reduce Zero–crossing

If u(t, x) is a solution of a one–dimensional, parabolic, second– order, linear partial differential equation (PDE), then it is known that, under suitable conditions, the number of zero–crossings of the function u(t, ·) decreases (that is, does not increase) as time t increases. Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Equations Generated by Bernstein Diffusions

In this Note we present new results which bring about hitherto unknown relations between certain Bernstein di¤usions wandering in bounded convex domains of Euclidean space on the one hand, and processes which typically occur in forward-backward systems of stochastic di¤erential equations on the other hand. A key point in establishing such relations is the fact that the Bernstein di¤usions we co...

A METHOD FOR COMPUTING DOUBLE BAND POLICIES FOR SWITCHING BETWEEN TWO DIFFUSIONS Revised Version March Running Title Optimal Switching Between Two Di usions

We develop a method for computing the optimal double band b B policy for switching between two di usions with continuous rewards and switch ing costs The two switch levels b B are obtained as perturbations of the single optimal switching point a of the control problem with no switching costs More precisely we nd that in the case of average reward problems the optimal switch levels can be obtain...

Querying Shapes of Histories

We present a shape de nition language, called SDL, for retrieving objects based on shapes contained in the histories associated with these objects. It is a small, yet powerful, language that allows a rich variety of queries about the shapes found in historical time sequences. An interesting feature of SDL is its ability to perform blurry matching. A \blurry" match is one where the user cares ab...
